How much would it cost to travel in Indian Railways
Are you planning a trip and not sure about how much the ticket will cost in Indian Railways?
Let’s face it. Going back to railway site and click again and again on “Get Fare” can be a bit tiring and time consuming.
On this page i’ll give you some tips on how to calculate an approximate fare in your head! Without needing to go to any railway website.
Rule no 1 > More distance traveled, lesser fare per km
The fare is calculated according to slabs and not a fixed distance per km. As you increase the distance traveled the per km cost will decrease.
Rule 2 Class differences
The lower classes have lower fare. Higher have higher. The additional surcharge, cancellation fee etc is higher in upper classes.
Choosing your class to travel is the main factor that regulate the cost if travel on same distance. Otherwise there is not much difference in different trains.
Rule 3 Speed of the train
Faster trains cost more to travel. But in express trains the difference is negligible.
Rule 4 Type of train
Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains cost higher. Not only because they are fast but also because of the premium services that they offer. Like free bedding and meals on the board.
Example fare table
Here is an example fare which will give you an idea on how much you will ve to pay in different classes. Please note, this is not an exact figure. You can expect 15-20% deviation on amount mentioned here.

Conclusions and observations
————————————————————————————————-
- Sleeper class/ 2nd class is best for short duration journey if you want to save money.
- 3E class has very less per/km fare for short duration journeys.
- As we upper classes, short duration journey gets drastically expensive. But if distance travelled is high then per/km charges go down considerably.
- Long distance travel in upper class won’t be that expensive per/km
